2014 FIFA World Cup: Belgium Eliminates US, 2-1
Belgium scored twice in extra time and eliminated the United States, 2-1, in the first round of knockout play at the 2014 FIFA World Cup at Salvador, Brazil on Tuesday.With the victory, the Belgians advanced to face Argentina in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
After both teams completed regulation time without scoring, the Belgians finally got a ball past American goalkeeper Tim Howard when Kevin De Bruyne scored in the 93rd minute. Belgium's Romelu Lukaku added a second goal at the 105' mark.
Julian Green scored the first US goal two minutes later, but the rally fell short. American Clint Dempsey had a chance to tie the game late, but Belgian goalie Thibaut Courtois made a terrific save to preserve the win.
American goalie Howard was brilliant throughout the contest. Belgium outshot the US. 39-17 and dominated the scoring chances in the match.
The other three quarterfinal matches were set earlier: Brazil vs. Colombia and France vs. Germany, both on Friday, and Costa Rica vs. The Netherlands on Saturday.
