If you've recently received a text message about an unpaid toll, you're not alone. A new wave of messages is making the rounds, catching many off guard. While they may appear official, experts urge caution before clicking any links.

We first warned you about this scam earlier this year — but now it’s back with a vengeance. Scammers have stepped up their game, and state officials say even tech-savvy Michiganders are being duped by these convincing, official-looking messages.

Why the Scam Works So Well

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is warning residents that scammers are now using a fake Michigan.gov address. To make matters worse, the latest phishing scam mimics the layout and appearance of MDOT’s official website.

How Scammers Make It Look Official

If you travel, you're automatically a target. The scammers had my attention earlier this year when I got a text saying I had unpaid tolls. My wife and I had just returned from a trip that took us on the Ohio Turnpike and through several states to visit our kids.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Michigan has no toll roads, except for the Mackinac Bridge.
  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reminds motorists that state officials will not request personal information over the phone, via text, or by email.
  • They will never demand money through those channels either. Payments are not accepted via gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.

Michigan Officials Issue a Warning

"MDOT is not sending out text messages demanding toll payments @Michigan.gov," Nessel stated. "This is a scam. If you receive these kinds of messages, delete them. If you sent any payment information, contact your financial institution immediately."

If you receive one of these scam texts, don't click on the link. You can report suspicious texts by forwarding them to SPAM (7726).
