While it seems as though we have been lacking winter weather so far this year, a couple hours north of Flint the folks in Houghton Lake are preparing for Tip-Up Town, U.S.A. 2012. While the Houghton Lake area has received several inches of snowfall in recent days, the warm weather has left open water and unsafe ice conditions on the lake. DNR and local law enforcement are urging people to stay off the lake this weekend. Most of the T.U.T. activities take place off the lake, so the festival will go on.
The festival runs for two consecutive weekends, so it is possible to have safe ice by next week. Everything else will go on as scheduled, including the carnival rides, petting zoo, parade, live music, 5k run, polar dip and much more. Snowmobilers can hit the trail systems around the lake and enjoy the newly fallen powder. For details and a festival schedule, go to: www.houghtonlakechamber.net
