Thanos Won’t Be Making an Appearance in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’
After lazily attempting to thwart our heroes from his space-throne in Guardians of the Galaxy, it looks like Thanos will be sitting the next one out, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed that the Mad Titan won’t be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. So, when will we see him again?
In an interview with Empire (via CBM), Feige cautioned, “I wouldn’t look too hard in that movie for Thanos,” and teased a much more formidable version of the character in future MCU installments:
The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It will be, ‘Oh, that’s why they’ve been teasing this villain for five years!’
Some fans have criticized Marvel’s inclusion of Thanos, who has spent his screen time hanging out on a giant throne, manipulating others to do (and mostly fail at) his bidding and making empty threats. Last we saw of the big purple guy voiced by Josh Brolin, he appeared in the Avengers: Age of Ultron post-credits scene, finally getting up off his big space-butt to retrieve the Infinity Gauntlet and boasting that he’ll take care of business himself.
While Feige avoided revealing the new villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he did confirm that we’ll see some new team members. As for when we might see Thanos again, that remains unclear, though Thor: Ragnarok seems like a safe bet.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are returning for the sequel, while Saldana herself confirmed Benicio Del Toro’s return as The Collector. Oldboy star Pom Klementieff has also joined the cast, presumably playing the role of Mantis, a character long rumored for the MCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
