Take a Look at the Aftermath As Whiteout Conditions Surprise Detroit Drivers [VIDEO]
It was an unbelievable scene in Metro Detroit on Sunday as snow squalls caused multiple pileups throughout the area.
Although not a lot of snow fell, drivers were surprised by quick bursts of snow that caused slippery road conditions to seemingly come out of nowhere.
As many as 160 vehicles were involved in three major incidents along I-696 alone:
- Up to 70 vehicles were involved in a pileup on eastbound I-696 near Halstead in Oakland County.
- Approximately 30 vehicles were involved in crashes along westbound I-696 near Middlebelt.
- Up to 60 vehicles were involved in collisions on westbound I-696 between Hoover and Van Dyke.
Detroit TV station Fox-2 also reports that other crashes were reported along the same freeway, involving as many as 15 vehicles.
Motorists reported to Detroit's WDIV that whiteout conditions came out of nowhere, some saying they were completely caught off guard by treacherous conditions that seemed to suddenly come about.
No Serious Injuries
Surprisingly, no serious injuries or deaths were reported in the aftermath.

Many people - some who claim to be lifelong Michigan residents - were quick to criticize drivers for supposedly going too fast for the conditions. [All of this is SIC'd by the way.]
- Let me be clear snow covered roads don't cause accidents... people driving too fast for weather conditions do
- Took me years to learn. Stay home when it snows. Grew up in Michigan. Lived there for decades.
- I would like to advise everyone. It's only 2 simple rules. 1. The speed limit is only good for perfect conditions. 2. If you can't see, stop driving.
