I'll never forget where I was on January 28, 1986. I was sitting in my 3rd grade classroom, and our teacher had rolled a giant cart with that huge, five-ton television in it into the room.
The space shuttle Endeavour was a magnet for gawkers as it made it's way through the streets of Los Angeles recently. Crowds had to be managed, traffic had to be re-routed, and because of the sheer size of the space shuttle, objects had to be moved. More than 26 years after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff, amateur video of the incident has been released.
This video is haunting, especially given what we know now. The explosion takes place at about 1:20 into the video, but it's evident that many in the live audience were unaware what was taking place until much later.
As a kid I was never that fascinated by outer space, I became very interested in the concept when NASA began the shuttle program. As a tribute to the retired program, 2,000 NASA workers got together to form a human shuttle; it took more than an hour to get all the workers in place.
