Student athletes in the Saginaw School District will no longer have to pay to play sports.

In a school board vote of 6-1, the "Pay To Play" program has been eliminated. The plan was in place for a few years, and required students to pay $75 to play sports every season. Board member Tamara McCray says that this should've happened a long time ago.

"Our children are struggling. A lot of our children are working, trying to help their parents. And it's just not fair. Education is number one, of course. But sports is number 2 to give our children something to do. Something outside of school and after school to keep them occupied," said McCray.

The President of Saginaw High School's PTA said that some students have had to rely on donations to play, and that they expect to see more kids play sports after the program is eliminated.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I know that schools are struggling, but it's a shame that families who are also struggling have to foot the bill.
