A candidate running for city council in a small, St. Clair County community says she wants to “Keep Marysville a white community as much as possible.”

Jean Cramer made the comments at a candidate forum held Thursday night. (8/22) Her answer was in response to the question, “Do you believe the diversity of our community needs to be looked at, and if so, should we be more aggressive in attracting foreign-born citizens?”

When asked to clarify her comments, Cramer said that she is not "against blacks" but opined that mixed-race couples should not be married.

“[A] husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids. That’s how it’s been from the beginning of, how can I say, when God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time. But as far as me being against blacks, no I’m not.”

According to the Port Huron Times Herald, another candidate running for City Council expressed his disbelief after Cramer's remarks.

"Just checking the calendar here and making sure it’s still 2019," Mike Deising said.

The city's current mayor, Dan Damman, called Cramer's remarks "vile" and "jaw-dropping."

I'm still in disbelief after reading numerous news accounts of this story. It's 2019, and this is the attitude held by certain entitled white individuals? Does it seem to anyone else like racism and exclusion are coming back into vogue? Disappointed and appalled don't even begin to express my feelings about what seems to be happening.

And [gasp!] what if there are enough small-minded people out there to actually elect her?
