The NFL is responding to the report that it was paid $5.4 million by the Department of Defense for salutes.

A report was released by the New York Jets, indicating that the NFL was paid by the Department of Defense for their "Hometown Heroes" segments, and people aren't too happy about it. Because that means that taxpayer dollars were used.

Fourteen NFL teams have been paid approximately $5.4 million by the Defense Department to feature members of the military, with most of the money coming from the National Guard. The NFL says it's considered advertising for the military, to encourage new recruitment.
