As one of Michigan's most popular area codes is about to run out of numbers, our state will adopt another three-digit calling code, and the thought of doing so is causing stress for some Michigan residents.

In Detroit, the 313 area code is iconic. Not only is it one of Michigan's three original area codes, it's tied to the city's identity. Eminem has a song called '313' which references his hometown and each year Detroit celebrates 313 Day on March 13.

Michigan's Original Area Codes

Less than 100 years ago, Michigan only had three area codes. This was part of a greater numbering scheme in 1947 in which only 86 area codes were assigned to the 48 contiguous US states.

  • (517) was the first area code assigned to Michigan, covering the Lansing area and the eastern half of the Lower Peninsula, excluding Detroit.
  • (616) covered most of West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
  • (313) was assigned to Southeast Michigan, covering Metro Detroit, the Greater Flint area, and part of the Thumb.

Fun Fact:  Michigan's first area code split occurred in 1961 when 906 became the new area code for the Upper Peninsula.

Fun Fact #2:  Michigan currently has 12 area codes.

Michigan's Largest Area Code is About to Run Out of Numbers

As the number of devices requiring phone numbers has the 313 area code nearly maxed out, the North American Number Plan Administrator (NANPA) has assigned yet another area code to the Detroit area.

Later in 2025, new customers and devices requiring new phone numbers will be assigned to the brand new 679 area code.

What Does the New 679 Area Code Mean for Michigan Residents?

As the new 679 area code is implemented in late 2025, New customers and customers requesting phone numbers for new equipment will be assigned a phone number within the 679 area code.

It should be noted that existing phone customers who have the iconic 313 area code will not be forced to change area codes or phone numbers. Additionally, the new 679 area code is considered an overlay, rather than a split. This means it will cover the same geographic region as the 313 area code.
