A Mid-Michigan woman seeking a promotion learned that there was a warrant for her arrest because she had not returned two library books.

Mindy Jones of Charlotte learned of the situation last week when her boss conducted a background check which is required for a promotion.

Jones learned that she had been charged with misdemeanor failure to return rental property. The 'crime' is punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine, according to the Lansing State Journal.

"This is kind of extreme for two library books," Jones said. "I work full-time and I'm a mom. I'm the head of my household. I can’t afford to take off work for two library books."

Jones said she returned the books to the Charlotte Public Library about six months ago, but was never sent any sort of bill for overdue charges. The paper says the warrant was issued two years ago.

The library says it only sends cases out tot he local crime unit if the value of its unreturned property exceeds $50.
