20 Odd Michigan Town Names And How They Actually Got Their Names

My entire life, the hardest part of getting something has been picking out a good name for it. All the stuffed animals I got as a kid were just that item, then throwing a -y on the end; Beary, Kitty, Froggy, etc.. You get the idea. It's a lot of pressure to give something a name that it will have for the rest of forever (if I ever have children...yikes).

As bad as my naming skills are, there are some people who name things more permanently, and places around the state still bear the name they chose years ago, for better or for worse.

I say this because Michigan has many "places" across its 83 counties, and, as it turns out, not all names have been treated equally. I say this with all the love in the world: there are some weird town names around the state, but in a fun way. The stories behind why these towns have been given those names are just as wacky.

For example, the city of Fenton and every street within it were decided by a crazy night of cards, with the winner of the game getting to name the city. It's about as Wild Wild West as it gets, and many other places around Michigan have stories just as eyebrow-raising.
