Michigan Wants Pot Shops to Snitch on Their Own Customers
Only in Michigan could a state agency tell you to sell someone weed, then call the cops on them for buying it.
Michigan’s New Rule Has Dispensaries Confused
That’s exactly what the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) just did. The CRA sent out a reminder telling dispensaries to report customers who have 'illegal amounts' of marijuana. But here’s the twist, it doesn’t say to stop selling it.

Confused? So is everyone else. One Upper Peninsula store manager said it best:
They want us to call and tell on the customer.
Imagine trying to run a business where your best customers could land you in hot water for doing what you’re licensed to do.
How Much Weed Is “Too Much”?
Under Michigan law, you can buy up to 2.5 ounces of weed or 15 grams of concentrate at once. More than that is technically a civil infraction, and twice that becomes a misdemeanor. To stay legal, stores simply split transactions: two receipts, same happy customer. The CRA, however, wants them to “report” it.

The agency won’t clarify the rule, leaving dispensaries guessing what “criminal activity” even means. Considering that marijuana is still illegal under federal law, every single customer technically qualifies.
Stores Say They’re Not Calling the Cops
Most shop owners say they’ll pass on playing hall monitor. One lawyer said:
You’re not gonna stay in business long if you call police on your customers.
Sure, there have been a couple of extreme cases where people loaded up like it was Black Friday at the weed shop, but for most, this rule just sounds ridiculous. Michigan’s cannabis industry already jumps through enough hoops, now the state wants them to play tattletale, too.
