The Michigan State Police is warning residents about a new scam involving someone impersonating an MSP lieutenant.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just about to the point of ignoring every call that isn’t from someone in my contacts.

Scammers Pretending to Be MSP Officers in New Phone Scam Scheme

The latest warning comes from the Michigan State Police Sixth District. According to the Big Rapids Pioneer, scammers are posing as a lieutenant from the post, telling people there are arrest warrants out for them and that they need to pay in order to avoid being taken into custody.

It’s important to note: Michigan State Police will never call to tell you that you have a warrant. Even if you do, any notification will happen in person, not over the phone.

How to Protect Yourself from Phone and Text Scams

🚨 Tips to Avoid Phone, Phishing, and Smishing Scams:

  • Don’t trust caller ID: Scammers can spoof official-looking numbers.
  • Never share personal info: Legitimate agencies won’t ask for Social Security numbers, banking info, or passwords by phone or text.
  • Don’t click suspicious links: Phishing and smishing messages often include links to fake websites.
  • Hang up and verify: If a call feels suspicious, hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified number.
  • Report scams: Contact the FTC or local law enforcement to report suspicious calls or messages.
