Dejuonai Gray tells Detroit's WJBK-TV that she was only away from her vehicle for a moment when it was stolen with the toddler inside.

What Happened?

"It happened that fast," Gray said. "I stepped out of the car for a split second, stood by the door, my sister was walking in the hair shop."

Gray tells the TV station her sister was visiting a new hair salon for the first time, and she was helping her get settled in.

"I was trying to make sure that she was settled in, it was her first time being at the shop," she says. "I’m standing between outside and the side of the shop, I turn around and my whole car's gone."

An employee inside the shop corroborated Gray's story, saying she was just away from her car for about 90 seconds.

Child Returned to Mom, Unharmed

Detroit police say the teenage driver who stole the car got about one mile away from the salon and took the baby out of the vehicle. A Good Samaritan saw the boy, picked him up, and found Gray as she was frantically searching for the child.

"A man was walking up the street, he had my baby, .... he said 'I’m just happy he's okay,'" Dejuonai said.

Suspects Under Arrest

Detroit police say three persons of interest have been arrested and could face charges that may include kidnapping or child abduction charges.

It is unclear if Gray will face any charges related to the incident.
