The mother of a West Michigan teenager who was murdered in 2016 plans to try her hand at standup comedy in order to give back to those who helped her through her grief.

Stacey Hilton tells WOOD-TV that Gilda's Club helped her through the healing process when her 18-year-old daughter McKenna was murdered by her half-brother. She wants to show her appreciation by participating in the organization's LaughFest comedy show this Friday.

"I want to do something that makes other people laugh," Hilton said. "And see that even though you are grieving, you can still have some laughter in your life and it's OK."

This will be Hilton's first time performing her comedy routine in front of a group of strangers. She says her daughter would laugh at the idea.

"I think she would be hideously embarrassed but I'm sure she would still be rooting me on."

Her performance is scheduled for 9:30 pm this Friday in Grand Rapids.
