A gas station's inventory problem turned into a big win for a 26-year-old Michigan Lottery player.

Michigan Woman's Lucky Ticket Switch

The Ottawa County woman said she stopped at the Speedway on Baldwin Street in Jenison, but found that the station was sold out of the two lottery tickets she usually buys. So she opted for a couple of Safe Cracker Cashword tickets instead.

“I don’t usually play Cashword games, but the store was out of the two tickets I usually play, so I bought two Safe Cracker Cashword tickets instead,” said the 26-year-old player, who chose to remain anonymous. “I scratched one of the tickets before going to bed and saved the other one for the morning."

Delayed Gratification:  Scratching the Cashword Ticket

Waiting until the next morning to scratch her second ticket was probably a great choice because she got to start her day with a win.

Story at a Glance

  • Winner: 26-year-old Ottawa County woman
  • Location: Speedway Gas Station, Jenison
  • Game: Safe Cracker Cashword instant ticket
  • Prize: $300,000
  • Twist: Her usual tickets were sold out, so she switched games

“I scratched the ticket as soon as I woke up and counted the words over and over again when I realized I had 10. I was shocked and excited but tried to stay calm when I realized I’d just won $300,000! It still doesn’t feel real.”

The player tells the Michigan Lottery she plans to use the money to pay off her car, invest, and save.

Owning a house with a pool in Michigan usually means enjoying a pool for about four months and loathing it the rest of the year. Not this house. This baby has an indoor pool that can be used year-round.

Although we do admit that it needs a bit of TLC.
