Sorry, Kramer and Newman. Michigan is hoping to crack down on those who smuggle out-of-state bottles and cans into our state in order to cash in on Michigan's 10 cent recycling refund.

It's estimated that Michigan loses up to $13 million dollars per year from out-of-state beer and pop containers, according to Angela Madden of the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association.

Lawmakers debated legislation this week that would punish violators who attempt to smuggle between 100 and 10,000 returnables in from other states. The penalty would include a $1,000 fine, up to 93 days in jail, or both.
