Meijer Associates Donate $500M to Local Charities for Giving Tuesday
Meijer team members in six states are making nearly $3 million dollars in donations to local charities throughout the Midwest. The grocery retailer sought input from its associates to identify and select nonprofit organizations that they deemed worthy of donations because of their ties to the communities they serve.
Rick Keyes, President and CEO of Meijer explained why Meijer decided to let employees decide which charitable organizations were most worthy of their donations.
"At Meijer, we care about the communities we serve and follow a simple philosophy set by our founders – to take care of our customers, team members and community and all of them will take care of you, just like a family," Keyes said. "Our team members are a crucial part of this so, as we show our support this holiday season, we wanted to invite them to play a larger role in our giving culture."
Meijer employees in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin were encouraged to form a committee to nominate local nonprofit organizations which would be up for consideration.
Each store in the chain was given the opportunity to award $10,000 to one organization or choose two nonprofits which would each receive $5,000.
