More than 50 people have been infected in a fast-growing measles outbreak in Texas and health officials warn that the number of cases is expected to grow.

Worst Measles Outbreak in Texas in Decades

State health officials in Texas confirm to CBS News that a measles outbreak has grown to 58 confirmed cases, the worst in 30 years. At least 13 people have been hospitalized and officials warn that additional cases are likely.

Dr. Celine Gounder is a medical contributor for CBS News. She says that lower vaccination rates can quickly lead to measles outbreaks.

"This is a measles outbreak that began in a very close-knit, rural, Mennonite community that has very low vaccination rates," Gounder said. "And unfortunately, we have seen vaccination rates exemptions ... really soar in Texas in recent years."

States Currently Battling Measles Outbreaks

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Mexico, Alaska, Georgia, New York, and Rhode Island have also reported cases of measles so far in 2025.

Measles Cases in Michigan

According to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System, there have been no measles cases reported in our state in 2025.

However, Michigan does not have a perfect track record when it comes to the highly contagious disease. In 2024, there were seven known measles cases reported in Michigan. There was one case reported in 2021 and one in 2022 as well.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warns that an unvaccinated child can contract measles when traveling abroad and even inside the US.
