Did Madonna Just Shade Lady Gaga Again?
If you've been on the Internet in the past few months, you're probably familiar with the running joke about Lady Gaga repeating one thing over the course of her A Star Is Born promo run.
"There can be a hundred people in the room, and ninety-nine don't believe in you, and you just need one to believe in you," the pop star (and now actress) said over and over in a variation of ways.
It appears pop queen Madonna has become aware of Gaga's recent go-to anecdote. On Monday (December 3), the icon unexpectedly re-posted a short clip from an old interview on her Instagram Story. The clip, seemingly from the early '90s, shows Madonna saying something quite similar.
"There's a hundred people in a room, and ninety-nine people say they liked it – I only remember the one person who didn't like it," Madge says in the throwback footage.
Of course fans immediately took this as Madonna throwing shade at Gaga, as the two have had a colorful history of past interactions and references.
After fans heavily compared Gaga's 2011 single "Born This Way" to Madonna's 1989 hit "Express Yourself," Madge talked about it in a 20/20 interview in 2012, famously saying, "It feels... reductive." She also said of Gaga, "I certainly thinks she references me a lot in her work."
In a 2015 Rolling Stone cover story, Madonna said there was no beef, but again brought up "Born This Way" saying, "The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs... I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue."
Some felt Gaga then shaded Madonna during a 2016 interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe. “Madonna and I are very different,” she told Lowe. “ I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna, she’s a nice lady, and she’s had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.”
Things have been mostly quiet on the Gaga/Madonna front lately, but did Madonna just reignite the flame with her Instagram Story post? We'll have to wait and see.
