Did This Michigan Politician Really Have Surgery Just to Prove a Point?

So the way I see it, there's 'standing up for what you believe in' and then there's 'taking it all a bit too far' just to prove a point.

A Michigan State Representative claims she has undergone voluntary sterilization surgery in order to avoid becoming pregnant while Donald Trump is President of the United States.

State Rep Gets Sterilized

Laurie Pohutsky is a member of the Michigan House of Representatives and served two years as speaker pro tempore. Pohutsky, a Democrat, has long been an advocate of abortion and a supporter of abortion rights.

She tells Detroit's WJBK-TV that her decision to undergo voluntary sterilization was years in the making and a result of her fear about what abortion rights could look like under a Donald Trump administration.

"That made me worry about things like insurance coverage, whether or not all hospital systems would even continue providing that level of care depending on what came out of Washington," Pohutsky said.

Representative Faces Backlash and Death Threats

After sharing her news at a rally at Michigan's Capitol, some have applauded Pohutsky. However, others call her voluntary sterilization reckless. She says she has also been getting death threats.

Rebecca Kiessling is a lawyer and pro-life advocate. She says it sends the wrong message to young people.

"I don’t know what this woman is doing other than just encouraging young women to render themselves infertile," she said. "I think that this administration is going to be supportive of not just women’s health but everyone’s health. Everyone is going to benefit and will have health and longevity, not just for ourselves, but also for our children."
