Rats have been a real nuisance for some Michigan residents over the years, especially those living in Detroit and Flint. Both cities landed in the top 50 of Orkin's 2023 Most Rat-Infested Cities in America.

While Detroit came in at #9 and Flint at #43, they're not the only ones dealing with rat infestations. During the colder months, Dearborn has encountered difficulties in addressing rat infestations citywide, as rodents tend to seek refuge underground to escape the harsh weather.

City of Dearborn:

The City of Dearborn and Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud successfully delivered on their promise to invest in rodent population control and tracking with the recent launch of a citywide subterranean rat prevention program, making the city the second municipality in Michigan to implement above and below-ground pest mitigation services.

How is Subterranean Baiting Conducted?

Trained professionals will place rodent bait in the sewer lines, above the waterline. The area will then be monitored monthly. The information collected will help Dearborn mitigate rat and other rodent infestations in the future.

Orkin will provide the city with a heatmap identifying areas of infestation, data analysis, city-owned parcel inspections, and more.

Is Subterranean Bating Dangerous to Humans or Animals?

Baiting does not pose a risk to the environment, non-targeted wildlife, pets, or humans.
