Nothing is worse than planning a beach trip with family and friends only to find out it's closed. The only thing worse is when it happens during a holiday weekend.

It never fails—every 4th of July, we have to break the bad news about beaches that are either closed or under a contamination advisory. Bad news like that can quickly throw a wrench into your holiday weekend plans.

Thankfully, this year there are only seven beaches in Michigan facing closures or advisories. Hopefully, none of them were part of your holiday plans.

  • Arenac County (Saginaw Bay - Lake Huron) - Singing Bridge Beach - Contamination Advisory
  • Cheboygan County (Mullet Lake) - Aloha Day Use Area - Contamination Advisory
  • Cheboygan County - (Mullet Lake) - Aloha State Park - Contamination Advisory
Mullet Lake has high bacteria levels, likely due to bird flocks in the area.
  • Macomb County (Lake St. Clair) - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach - Closed
  • Oakland County (Handsome Lake) - Crossroads for Youth - Contamination Advisory
  • Oakland County (Sylvan Lake) - Ferndale - Closed
  • Oceana County (Lake Michigan) - Lighthouse Beach at Silver Lake State Park - Contamination Advisory

If a beach is under a contamination advisory, avoid swimming, wading, or participating in water activities at the contaminated beach until the advisory is lifted. Keep your pets away as well.

With over 1,200 public beaches and nearly 600 private beaches, you can usually expect a closure or two around the holidays, and that's exactly what you're seeing as we roll into the 4th of July weekend.

You can check out Beach Guard for any changes and updates that may occur this weekend.
