While it may be illegal to blow grass clippings into the roadway in some states, that's just not the case in Michigan. However, it is generally discouraged and considered disrespectful. Not to mention it can make road conditions extremely dangerous for motorcyclists. As a matter of fact, it can be downright deadly.

Even though it's not against the law in Michigan, Many municipalities have local ordinances that prohibit blowing or depositing grass clippings or other debris onto roadways.

Back in 2019, Sumpter Township which is located in Wayne County made headlines when an ordinance was passed that made it illegal to blow grass clippings into roadways. According to Sumpter Township, anyone who violates the zoning ordinance could be charged with a misdemeanor, and if convicted, potentially spend 90 days in jail and/or pay a fine.

The ordinance came into fruition after a Sumpter Township resident said a family member had an accident while driving his motorcycle over grass clippings.

To avoid blowing your grass clippings into roadways, simply direct the grass into your yard or dispose of them. It seems like common sense, yet here we are.
