As I drive to work each morning, I consistently pass by a house with a green porch light. At first, I assumed it was merely a case of the homeowner forgetting to switch back to a traditional light bulb after the holidays, attributing it to laziness. Little did I know, there was a much deeper meaning behind that green glow.
If you're not aware of why people are illuminating their front porches with a green light, don't worry—you're not alone. This is a relatively new trend.
Why Are People in Michigan Using Green Porch Lights?
Green is the color of hope, renewal, and well-being.
People in Michigan and throughout the United States tend to illuminate their front porch in November to coincide with Veteran's Day on the 11th. However, more and more Americans are keeping their porch lights green year round.
According to Greenlight a Vet, "Greenlight" is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement.
The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans, and "greenlight" them forward as valued members of our communities.
It's simply a way of showing appreciation for our U.S. veterans while also spreading support and awareness.
To show your support not only in November but throughout the year, buy a green lightbulb and swap out your existing porch light. Then take a picture of your green light and post it using the hashtag #greenlightavet.
