Chances are, you already drive with your seat belt on. If not, it’s time to start.
First, it’s the law, and second, Michigan’s Click It or Ticket campaign will begin soon. Police officers can pull drivers over solely for not wearing a seat belt.
The Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 18 through May 31, 2026.
What is the fine in Michigan for not wearing a seat belt?
According to the State of Michigan, the fine for not wearing a seat belt is roughly $65, although the total cost may vary depending on the jurisdiction.
Either way, save yourself the money, and buckle up.

I recall that it took some time to get used to wearing a seat belt, whether I was driving or just riding as a passenger. Over time, though, it became second nature - now it’s just part of the routine, and I don’t even think twice about it anymore.
That being said, it is kind of wild to think that back in the day, people used to ride around in the back of pickup trucks like it was completely normal. No seat belts, no worries - just bouncing around and holding on for dear life like it was part of the fun.
Most vehicles even remind you with a 'ding' to buckle up. Ding or no ding, just buckle up, stay safe - and save yourself the $65 fee.
