I talk for a living, which means mispronouncing a word isn't just embarrassing. It's embarrassing with an audience. So those in the industry live by the code: "If you can't pronounce it or you're not sure, don't say it."

Here in Michigan, we can explain how to pronounce Mackinac to tourists, then lose a tongue-twisting battle with a condiment.

A 2026 analysis from Unscramblerer.com used Google Trends and Ahrefs estimates to rank pronunciation searches from January 1 through October 20, 2026. That measures search interest; nobody secretly recorded you ordering lunch.

Before revealing Michigan's most mispronounced word, here's a look at the national top 10:

  1. Worcestershire sauce (WUUS-ter-sheer saws)
  2. Gyro (YEE-roh)
  3. Dachshund (DAKS-hund)
  4. Niche (NEESH)
  5. Porsche (POR-shuh)
  6. Qatar (kuh-TAR)
  7. GIF (JIF)
  8. Curaçao (KYUR-uh-sow)
  9. Saoirse (SEER-shuh)
  10. Pho (FUH)

Worcestershire sauce led with 321,600 searches. Understandable. That word looks less like a word and more like the alphabet sneezed.

Gyro and dachshund followed. When lunch and a wiener dog require homework, maybe spelling needs a performance review. I suspect that all over Mid-Michigan, plenty of us have pointed at the gyro on the menu and said, "I'll have that." Outstanding survival skills.

So Michigan needs help saying a word for awkward. That's almost impressive.

Personally, I'll stick with "ope." My mouth already has that one on speed dial.

Michigan Colleges Ranked by What Their Graduates Earn

This gallery ranks Michigan schools offering bachelor’s degrees using median annual earnings four years after graduation. Earnings come from the U.S. Department of Education’s June 2026 College Scorecard release, as published by College Outcome Ledger, and cover federal-aid recipients who were working and no longer enrolled.
Tuition and required-fee figures are 2026–27 estimates from each school, before financial aid, using Michigan resident rates at public universities. Housing, meals, and books are excluded. Actual costs vary by program and credit load.
