IRS Extending Tax Deadline for Millions – Is Michigan Included?
As the April 15 deadline for filing taxes approaches, millions of Americans are getting a grace period from the Internal Revenue Service.
The IRS is extending the filing deadline to May 1, 2025, as several states - or portions of states - have been affected by natural disasters, thus resulting in federal disaster declarations.
IRS Extends Tax Deadline for at Least Nine States in the US
While most taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to file their taxes, automatic deadline extensions have been applied to nine states, according to Today.
Many of these states have been affected by major weather disasters and have received federal aid from FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Residents in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina were all dealt catastrophic blows by Hurricane Helene in September of last year. The tax deadline for those residents has been pushed back by more than two weeks.
Additionally, extra tax time will be allotted to residents of specific counties in Tennessee, Alaska, New Mexico, and Virginia.
Northern Michigan Ice Storm Causes Catastrophic Damage
While power has been restored to a majority of customers in Northern Michigan after a catastrophic storm wreaked havoc on the region, many customers were without electricity for nearly two weeks. (As of April 14, about 4,000 customers are still without power.)
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared an energy emergency for 14 counties in Northern Michigan. However, despite the region's devastating conditions over the last couple of weeks, no such declaration has been made at the federal level.
FEMA has yet to make a disaster declaration for Northern Michigan, so a tax-filing grace period will not be put in place for residents who've been affected by the recent ice storm.
