Hackers Blamed for Genesee County Siren False Alarms
Officials in Genesee County are saying hackers caused sirens to trigger two false alarms yesterday. (7/31)
Genesee County 911 Deputy Director Tim Jones confirmed to WJRT that sirens were activated at about 6:25 and 11:25 pm and that the triggers were caused by someone infiltrating the system.
Jones says officials are working with the FBI and FCC in order to find the culprit(s) responsible for hacking into the system.
"We are investigating all possibilities to resolve the problem and to maintain the safety and security of our community," the Genesee County Dispatch Authority said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "We are aggressively working at finding the cause of the activations. We are very concerned given the time of year about the public's safety."
Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information on the person or persons responsible for triggering the erroneous alarms.
