You may be a creature of habit, always shopping at the grocery store you're most familiar with or the one where you notoriously find the best prices. Or you may be a bargain shopper that pores over the weekly sale ads from Meijer, Walmart, Kroger, VG's, and any other local store in your area in order to take advantage of the week's best deals.

Cheapest Grocery Store Chains in America

But you may be surprised that the chain that is credited with having the best prices in the US wasn't listed above.

US News and World Report crunched the numbers from a national survey to determine consumers' opinions of the leading national chains and find out which chains consistently offer the best value for the money.

It's important to note that many stores may not have made the cut simply because they don't have enough locations to register nationally. For instance:  Most consumers in our area and throughout Michigan are familiar with Meijer. And while the Grand-Rapids-based retailer has a large footprint in Michigan, it only operates stores in six states in the Midwest. (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin)

What National Chain is Deemed the Cheapest?

According to the national Study, consumers consider Aldi to be the chain with the best overall prices. Unlike some of the aforementioned stores, Aldi operates more than 2,300 stores across 39 states, including 105 locations in Michigan.

What other grocery retailers made the list? According to US News and World Report, these are the seven national chains that are considered the cheapest grocery chains in the US.

  1. Aldi (2,300 stores in 39 states)
  2. Woodman's Markets (19 stores in two states)
  3. WinCo Foods (139 stores in 10 states)
  4. Lidl (181 stores in 10 states)
  5. Market Basket (93 stores in four states)
  6. Grocery Outlet (457 stores in eight states)
  7. Costco (594 stores in the US)
