Gov. Whitmer Discusses Michigan’s COVID Spike, Election Results [VIDEO]

Governor Gretchen Whitmer resisted the urge to gloat as she congratulated Joe Biden on becoming President-Elect of the United States. In the video below, she talks about Michigan's "drama-free" election and the record number of COVID-19 cases recorded in our state on Saturday.

Shortly after several news outlets declared Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election, the governor's office released a statement congratulating Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris, saying that the common enemy of the people is COVID-19.

“I want to congratulate President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on their hard-fought win in this election," the governor said in a press release. "I look forward to working with both of them as we continue to fight the spread of COVID-19, work to rebuild our economy, and save lives. Now, with the election behind us, it is time for the American people to unite against our common enemy: COVID-19."

In an interview with Detroit TV station WDIV, Whitmer criticized the Michigan State Supreme Court for causing confusion by overruling executive orders that have been issued by her office.

"We have to get the politics out of this public health crisis," the governor said. "And I would love for the legislature to codify the rule that came out of DHHS (referring to the mandates issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services), it does have the force of law already."

Whitmer noted that such a ruling would go a long way to demonstrate to Michiganders that a mask mandate is not about either party, but about protecting the public's health.

"To this day, the best tool we have to keep ourselves safe and protect our economy is simply wearing a mask."
