Genesee County Fair Will Likely Be Canceled by Health Department

The emergency order was given the go-ahead yesterday at a meeting last night.

You can add fairs to the long list of businesses that are being affected by COVID-19. A couple of weeks ago, the board for the Iowa State Fair elected to postpone their event until 2021. The Minnesota and Wisconsin state fairs have also been canceled.

Of course, the aforementioned events are ENORMOUS; the Iowa State Fair, by itself, attracts more than a million people over the course of a week-and-a-half. The Genesee County Fair, by contrast, brought in a little over 200,000 people last year, with attendance being up aboutt 4% from 2018.

Either way, large gatherings of people are being highly discouraged by doctors and infectious disease experts right now. Case in point: the Olympics were canceled. THE OLYMPICS.

With this in mind, health officials are planning on canceling the Genesee County Fair, which is scheduled to take place at the end of August, saying that it "does attract a great number of people and we are concerned about transmitting COVID-19 infection,”

At a meeting last night, County Health Officer John McKellar said that he will issue an emergency order to cancel the fair. The board of health will also decide on the fate of Back to the Bricks; a news conference is scheduled for today.

From what we've read on social media, the 4H competitions for the Genesee County Fair have already been canceled, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise.
