Depression, lack of sleep, and a higher-than-average divorce rate all contribute to unhappiness in the Motor City. Detroit has been named the unhappiest city in the US, according to a survey conducted by WalletHub.

A couple of key findings:

  • Fremont, California, has the lowest separation & divorce rate, 15.96 percent, which is three times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest at 47.44 percent.
  • Overland Park, Kansas, has the lowest share of adults sleeping less than 7 hours per night, 25.60 percent, which is two times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest at 50.10 percent.

The results were based on 31 indicators of happiness including leisure time, income growth, and depression.

According to WalletHub, Plano, Texas is the country's happiest city.

The only other Michigan city to make the list is Grand Rapids, which ranks at #62 on the list.
