Chimps in New York Denied Human Rights
Yes, you read that correctly.
I had to read this story a few times this morning before I fully understood what I was reading. An animal advocacy group in New York has been trying to get two chimps in New York to be granted the legal rights of humans. The two chimps they are arguing for are named Tommy and Kiko, they are currently caged in a trailer lot at an animal sanctuary. The animal advocacy group is arguing for the chimps to be granted a writ of habeas corpus, which for humans says that anyone unlawfully detained should be brought before a judge or into court. Attorneys for the group say the animals should be moved to a larger outdoor sanctuary instead of being caged.
So far, the appeals court has upheld the lower court's ruling to deny the chimps the rights of humans.
