Although Sesame Street was known for incorporating tasteful breastfeeding scenes into its educational platform in the 70s and 80s, it's since abandoned the practice in favor of bottle-feeding.

Now blogger Lani Michelle wants "Lactivism" to go mainstream, and is circulating an online petition:

Back in the 70′s and 80′s nursing was tastefully shown on the show but now they have replaced their nursing videos with bottles. Please note… We are not asking Sesame Street to remove bottle feeding. We are asking that both ways of feeding babies be shown as normal.

If we normalize breastfeeding in our community, especially with our children, we can help raise a generation of breastfeeders which will support our economy, make for healthier children and lessen the risk of breast cancer for many nursing mamas!

Yahoo reports that breastfeeding has not been well-received in recent years. "In 2011 alone, a judge ruled that a woman couldn't do it in 'his court' and under 'his law,' and Facebook deleted thousands of photos of mothers with babies at their breasts. Stores have thrown women out for discreetly nursing their infants."

Do you agree, and will you sign this online petition asking Sesame Street to once again incorporate breastfeeding into its children's show?
