’28 Outs’ – New Documentary Spotlights Detroit Tigers’ ‘Perfect Game That Wasn’t’
An upcoming ESPN documentary will spotlight a historic Detroit Tigers game from 2010 when a bad call robbed pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.
ESPN will debut the new episode of E60 this Sunday (8/18) at 5:00 PM. "28 Outs: An Imperfect Game" puts the spotlight on that game from June 2, 2010 that had such an unfortunate ending.
The Perfect Game That Wasn't
As we dive into that fateful night 14 years ago, let's keep in mind that looking at instant replays was not yet a part of the Major League Baseball fabric.
Armando Galarraga was on fire. The Tigers pitcher had struck out 26 Cleveland batters. He was literally one out away from throwing a perfect game and making history for the Detroit Tigers.
How rare is a perfect game? A quick internet search reveals that in MLB history, there have only been 24 games that qualify as a 'perfect game' by today's definition - throwing a full nine innings while preventing a single batter from the opposing team from reaching base.
But as the history books will reflect, Jason Donald stepped up to the plate and hit a routine ground ball to the right side of the infield. Galarraga hustled over to cover the bag and clearly beat the runner for the third out in the 9th inning.
But this is where it all went wrong.
First base umpire Jim Joyce called the runner safe, and Galarrage ended up with a one-hit win rather than a perfect game. I'm only a casual baseball fan, and I've probably seen this replay 100 times.
'28 Outs - An Imperfect Story' sits down with Galarraga, Joyce, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and takes a look at efforts by a Monmouth University law class to award Galarraga a perfect game.
