Our thoughts are with the family of a 16-year-old girl who died this morning after being stabbed to death by a classmate at a Detroit-area high school.

The fight began this morning around 8:30 at Fitzgerald High School in Warren. The 16-year-old victim was stabbed twice with a kitchen knife by another 17-year-old girl. She was then pronounced dead at 9:24 this morning.

Authorities tell WXYZ the girls were both A students who were formerly friends. The feud between the girls began when they were both interested in the same boy. Witnesses at the school say the boy broke up with the girl who was the attacker and then began dating the victim.

Reports say the 17-year-old girl was taken into custody immediately and is expected to be charged with homicide.
