10-Year-Old Boy Tried to Thwart Attacker Who Killed WWJ’s Jim Matthews
The brother of fallen radio news anchor Jim Matthews says he believes Matthews' 10-year-old son tried to fend off the attacker who killed his father late last week.
Attacker Had a Long Criminal Record
Authorities have arraigned Arthur Levan Williamson, charging him with seven felony charges including first-degree murder. Williamson is accused of killing Jim Matthews, who served as the overnight news anchor for Detroit's WWJ-AM radio. Matthews was found dead in his home Friday (9/23), his girlfriend and two children also sustained injuries from the melee.
According to the Detroit News, Williamson has a long criminal record, dating back about 30 years. Williamson's record includes convictions for assault, assault with intent to commit murder, kidnapping, possession of illegal weapons, drugs, and various charges related to obstructing or assaulting police officers.
10-Year-Old Boy Attempted to Stop His Father's Attacker
Joe Nicolai is Jim Matthews' older brother. He and his wife live next door to the home where Matthews lived with his family. He alleges that Matthews' girlfriend Nicole Guertin may have had a connection with Williamson, possibly meeting him through a recovery or support group. Major news outlets have not yet confirmed this fact. At this time, Nicolai's claim is alleged.
There were no signs of breaking and entering and he believes he had seen Williamson with the family a few times in the past.
Matthews' son is said to be in critical but stable condition. He was found tied up in a closet after the attack on Friday. Nicolai tells the Detroit News that he's certain his nephew tried to prevent his father's murder.
“I know (my nephew) was attacked brutally and tied up in the closet because he was trying to defend his father and his sister," Nicolai said. "Ten-year-old boy, not on his watch.”
A GoFundMe account has been established for Matthews' kids in order to pay medical bills and ongoing support
