The Detroit Tigers will probably win a lot of games like this one today, outhitting their opponents on a day when our pitching staff didn't have their "A" game. Max Scherzer started the game for the Tigers, and wasn't hitting his spots in most attempts. The Mets got to Scherzer for 3 runs on four hits and two walks in 2 and 2/3rds innings of work. Scherzer did manage to strike out 4. The Tiger bats saved the day, with the newest "Big Fella" going long to drive home two in the 4th inning.

The Detroit Tigers could wear the nickname "Tie-gers" after playing to a 7-7 tie game this afternoon with the New York Mets in Spring Training action in Lakeland, Florida. It is the 3rd straight tie game for the Tigers, who started Grapefruit League actions with six straight wins before losing a game and then battling to a draw in their recent efforts. Bright spots for the Tigers were Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila, who each had two hits and drove in Detroit runs. Andy Dirks got into the game late, but drove home the run that tied the game for the Tigers.

It is becoming apparent that this team could win a lot of ballgames this season, especially once they begin to count on April 5th. Ryan Raburn drove home two runs with a 3rd inning triple, first baseman Ryan Streiby also knocked one home in the 3rd and Ramon Santiago hit a sacrifice fly to plate the 4th Tiger run. Miguel Cabrera smoked a solo homer in the 4th to account for the 5th and final Tiger run of the day.

The Tigers didn't play all their normal starters (it was a split squad day), but got outstanding pitching from everyone that took the mound for Detroit. Rick Porcello pitched the first two innings and didn't allow any earned runs. Miami did score in the first, but the Marlins' only run came on a throwing error by 3rd baseman Danny Worth. After that, the Tiger pitching put up goose eggs. Drew Smyly and Casey Crosby each tossed two scoreless innings.

The Detroit Tigers begins Spring Training game action on Friday afternoon when they host Florida Southern University at Joker Marchant stadium in Lakeland, Florida. Those following the Tigers are still buzzing about a ball that new Tiger first baseman Prince Fielder hit during batting practice on Wednesday. Detroit News writer Tom Gage estimated that it traveled over 600 feet. That's a man-sized poke. The ball cleared the pine trees shown in the photo, the fence in front of the trees is nearly 400 feet.
