Tiger starter Brad Penny gave up three runs in the first inning today.  He didn't give up another one until he allowed a solo homer in the 7th, but by then the Tigers had a lead and wouldn't relinquish it.

The big sticks for the Tigers did most of the damage, Victor Martinez drove home the first two.  Rookie Andy Dirks tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the 7th.  A couple of batters later, Miguel Cabrera launched a two-run shot into the left field bullpen, his 18th homer of the year, and the Tigers had their first lead in their 3-game series with the Angels.

Brad Penny picked up his 6th win of the season with help from relievers David Purcey, Joaquin Benoit and closer Jose Valverde who picked up his 21st save. Final score; Tigers 5, Angels 4.

The Tigers head to Kansas City for a 4-game series with the Royals beginning tomorrow night at 8.  Max Scherzer will start for the Tigers, still looking for his 10th win of the season.  Scherzer has been lit up by opposing hitters over the last two weeks and needs to get back in the groove.  Let's hope he finds it.
