Detroit's top pitching prospect, Jacob Turner got a surprise start today in front of a full house at Comerica Park and a national television audience.  The 20-year old right-hander showed great poise in his Major League debut, and left the game after 5 and a third innings with the game tied at 1-1 with a runner on first.

When Maicer Itzturis launched the second pitch of the game from Detroit's Rick Porcello into the seats, I thought, "Oh no, here we go again."  Porcello would settle down after that and scatter 5 hits over 8 innings to earn his 11th win of the season.  Brennan Boesch would tie the game in the bottom of the 1st with a moon shot that landed deep in the discount seats in right field.  Read M

Tiger starter Brad Penny gave up three runs in the first inning today.  He didn't give up another one until he allowed a solo homer in the 7th, but by then the Tigers had a lead and wouldn't relinquish it.

Justin Verlander only gave up one run last night.  That's usually good enough to win.  The Angels' Dan Haren didn't give up any as the Tigers could only manage two measley hits.  Angels 1, Tigers 0.
