Memorial Day weekend is a time when most of us celebrate the beginning of summer by heading to the lake or up north or with a backyard barbecue. None of which would be possible without the sacrifices of our veterans and active military members.

In communities all over Michigan, all over America, parades and ceremonies to remember the contributions of our Armed Forces both past and present are taking place. It is important that we show up to let them know we care. After all, they are our sons and fathers, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends. They are Americans who have done their duty, mostly with little or no fanfare.

If you see a veteran or an active duty soldier today, be sure to thank them for their service. And remember those that paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day today. And remember the reason we have this day.
