Michigan: You’ll Soon be Saying Goodbye to This Type of Appliance

If you've gone shopping for a major appliance like a refrigerator, washer, or dishwasher lately, you were probably dismayed to find that prices for those items have not been insulated from inflation. Even prices for so-called 'cheaper models' or 'bargain brands' have seen increases in the last handful of years.

But those 'cheaper models' or 'bargain brands' may not be around much longer.

We recently went shopping for a new washing machine a venture that was need-based, not want-based, after our 13-year-old machine breathed its last breath. Needless to say, we found price tags that were roughly 20% higher than the last time we'd set out on a similar excursion.

New Appliance Restrictions Are on the Horizon

The next time you find yourself in the aisles of Best Buy, Carl's Appliance, or Menards staring down a major appliance salesperson, you may be in for a surprise.

Depending on your timeframe, you may find some less expensive appliance models are no longer available, as many are considered less energy efficient.

The Department of Energy is implementing new standards for refrigerators and freezers, which will take less energy-efficient models off the market, according to Fox News.

"...the updated standards, which will take less efficient but cheaper models off the market, will in 30 years remove the amount of emissions generated by the combined annual emissions of 12.7 million homes."

 

Certain Appliances to be Phased Out Beginning in 2029

(Of course, the government is making it as complicated as possible), but according to this release from the DOE, appliances that don't meet certain energy-efficiency standards will be phased out as early as 2029 while others will begin their path to extinction in 2030.
