MI Postal Workers Cannot Accept These Items as Holiday Gifts

It's the time of year when Michigan residents find themselves wanting to be a little more generous to the ones who tirelessly serve our communities. However, if you want to show some appreciation to your local postal workers, including mail carriers, you should probably be aware of the restrictions they face.

The Michigan Postal Service has rules to keep things running smoothly. Knowing these rules can help you say 'thanks' to your postal worker in a way that follows their guidelines.

First things first, you should know right out of the gate that cash tips are an unacceptable way of saying 'thanks' to your favorite postal worker. It may be the most convenient way for you to show your appreciation, but they're federal employees, and their jobs fall under the Executive Branch of the United States government.

U.S. Postal Service:

Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period.

At the end of the day, even though your gesture would be appreciated, your favorite postal worker isn't expecting anything from you. You could simply tell them how much you appreciate them and the work they do. You'd be surprised at how well that would go over.
