Time to channel your inner Sandy and Danny! CBS will air a Grease Sing-a-Long on June 7th. As part of their Sunday Night Movies, which features iconic films from the Paramount Pictures library, the special will air from 8:30pm and will replace this year's Tony Awards telecast for the network.
The special will feature follow-along lyrics to all the songs from the 1978 hit film allowing viewers to join in the fun and sing and dance throughout the movie. The special will also be available for streaming on CBS All Access.
To this day, the film is a cultural phenomenon that offered up star-making performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The movie, based on the 1971 Broadway musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, also featured standouts Stockard Channing, Didi Conn, Dinah Manoff, Eve Arden, Jeff Conaway and Frankie Avalon.
Not only was the movie a huge hit upon its release, but the songs were unforgettable as well with tunes like “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” “Summer Nights",“Greased Lightnin’,” and the Academy Award-nominated “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” sung by Newton-John. None were more successful than the title track, "Grease" written by Bee Gee Barry Gibb and performed by Frankie Valli.
Earlier it was reported that Paramount Pictures is developing a prequel to Grease titled Summer Loving. The movie will center on the original meeting between lead characters Sandy and Danny before the main plot takes place. There is no word yet on a release date. There is also work being done to bring a rendition of the film to television in a new series titled Grease: Rydell High.
