One year after Eric Stuyvesant left his son in the backseat of his car, the Dallas dad shares his story.

Fortunately, his then-three-year-old son Michael survived, after spending more than an hour in the car. He suffered six strokes, and spent several months recovering.

Stuyvesant never thought it could happen to him.

"I know who I was before the accident, and I know what my reaction would have been," Stuyvesant said. "And it would have been a short tempered, ill-tempered snarky commentator on social media."

But he found out just how such a thing could happen. Stuyvesant and his wife Michelle's routine varied the day of the incident, and Eric says he simply went into autopilot.

"If people could be understanding and think before they speak," Michelle said. "Put yourself in somebody else's place and imagine what they're going through.  Or try."

In the videos below, Eric and his wife talk about their experience, Michael's recovery, and explain how such an awful mistake is one that even the best parents can make.
