Don Kelly gave the Tigers an early lead with a solo homer in the first inning.  His throwing error on a bases-loaded play at the plate in the 4th allowed the Texas Rangers to open up a 4-1 lead and they never looked back.

The Tigers committed two costly errors that led to Ranger runs, and by the time they put together a small rally in the 9th inning it was too little, too late.  Final score:  Rangers 7, Tigers 3.  Phil Coke made his first start after coming back from an ankle injury and took the loss, his record is now 1-6.  The Tigers had a chance to pull to within a half game of  first-place Cleveland after the Indians lost this afternoon to Minnesota.  Instead, Detroit comes back home for 8 games trailing Cleveland by a game and a half.  The Tigers face Seattle for 4 games, then play a makeup on Monday against Tampa Bay, then it's 3 against Cleveland.

Justin Verlander will start tomorrow night's game against the Mariners, first pitch at 7:05.
