Population in Flint Falls Under 100,000 for First Time in Over 90 Years

For the first time in over 90 years, Flint’s population has fallen to under 100,000 according to new estimates released from the Census Bureau.

MLive reports that on Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Flint’s population had dropped to 99,763 in 2013, down from 100,412 in 2012. The population had peaked at nearly 200,000 as recently as the 1960s.

Officials say that the drop in population will mean less funding from state and federal sources such as grants and state revenue sharing and have also acknowledged that Flint’s population will continue to decline before stabilizing in 2020. The city’s new Master Plan is based on the belief that the population will be between 76,000 to 150,000 in the long term. However, even with the drop, analysts believe that Flint is still the seventh largest city in the state.
