Jeff Kopp tells a Grand Rapids TV station he doesn't usually walk his dog in that particular area of Diamond Lake, but Monday 'Buddy' seemed to be on a mission. The dog pulled him toward a wooded area where the pair found a newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached.

Cathleen Neal, Kopp's daughter, said she believes the baby belonged to a teenage girl who lives in the area.

“When the young lady came out and asked us what was going on and I told her, she just made it seem like she didn’t know what was going on, but yet she was the one who had the baby,” Neal told WOOD-TV.

Michigan has a 'safe haven' law, which allows anyone to surrender a newborn at a hospital, police station, or fire station with no questions asked.

The baby, and the girl who is believed to be her mother, were taken to an area hospital.
